South Africa's most watched news channel, eNCA, experienced a power surge at their Hyde Park facilities on Monday, April 28th that forced the channel to go off air for well over an hour.
The channel went off air at approximately 10:12am on Monday morning during a live news bulletin. The channel then had a black screen with the channels on screen ident for well over twenty minutes. A few minutes later, the channel then unintentionally broadcast its raw satellite feed from its Cape Town broadcast facility that just showed the screen below:
This screen appeared intermittently between then and a few minutes past twelve.
Eventually, the channel showed various taped content, like Against All Odds and Judge for Yourself, with just a static image of the channel's logo appearin during what should have been ad breaks.
Eventually, the channel came back up at 11:56 with Andrew Barnes live from Cape Town welcoming viewers with "A very good morning to you, this is NewsDay on eNCA, I'm Andrew Barnes. Good to be back on-air after some gremlins have been weeded out of the system."
This was immediately followed by the first story, leaving the tradtitional read of the headlines at the top of the hour. However, this did not last long as the channel went back off air at 12pm, returning to the airwaves at 12:04pm, this time with a full rundown of the headlines before normal news resumed.
While the country's most watched news channel was experiencing these technical difficulties, Phuti Mosomane of ANN7 decided to take time to send some unprofessional tweets about the situation. Though it would be okay for journos of rival channel's to tweet something to get viewers to change the channels and try something new while their channel of preference was off line, Mosomane instead chose to tweet things like "Can't cope?" then inserting the channels Twitter handle.
This is not the first time eNCA experienced a power surge that set them off the air. In 2010, they experienced a similar situation that damaged the sets used by etv's breakfast show, Sunrise. That of course, sent that show off the air for weeks while new sets were constructed and eNews Prime Time was done from Cape Town due to damage.
It is going to be interesting to see when the channel resumes broadcasts from their Johannesburg facility again.

eNCA Suffers Power Surge Pushing Channel Off-Air, again
Freedom Day Coverage
It seems as if the local news channels takes a broadcast on am important holiday like Freedom Day very seriously. All the major news channels had anchors usually seen during busy perdiods during the week on air on Sunday.
On eNCA, News Night anchor Iman Rappetti went on air at some point between 8am and 9am, interviewing guests from all kinds of fields to talk about the day including poets, politicians and analysts, even saying that she is a "very lucky girl" to have gotten the opportunity.
Over on SABC News (and SABC 2) Morning Live's week news reader, Ayanda-Allie Paine, was anchoring the show, her big get being ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete.
ANN7 had their week breakfast show anchor, Peter van Onselen, anchoring the weekend edition of the show, also interviewing various analysts.

Special Freedom Day Boradcasts
As we celebrate 20 years of Freedom in our country, various channels are planning special programming to commemorate the event, our first without our first democartically elected president Nelson Mandela.
As expected, SABC News will be carrying the carrying the 'official proceedings' live from the Union Buildings at 10am, simulcast on SABC 2.
eNCA will be re-airing the documentary The Blood Miracle at 1pm and again at 9pm. Their special coverage starts at 8am with special guests and senior anchors being brought in.
All three local news channels will have special coverage throughout the day.
Carte Blanche (Mnet, 7pm) will be airing Carte Blanche: 20 Years of Democracy. The synopsis is as follows :"
In the run up to the first democratic elections in 1994, a fearless breed of young photojournalists roamed the townships of Tokoza and Katlehong on Johannesburg’s East Rand, documenting a civil war that caused hundreds of deaths and displacement.

In the run up to the first democratic elections in 1994, a fearless breed of young photojournalists roamed the townships of Tokoza and Katlehong on Johannesburg’s East Rand, documenting a civil war that caused hundreds of deaths and displacement.
Now, two decades later, these middle-aged and hardened lens-men
remember that pivotal era of transition and the man who led the pack.
Ken Oosterbroek died in a hail of bullets in the streets of Tokoza
just days before the election, leaving a legacy of definitive
photographs of those dark and dangerous days. This Sunday Carte Blanche
looks back at a time etched in blood. "
Mzansi Magic has the documentary Countdown to Freedom at various times on Sunday and throughout the week on their group of channels. The synopsis is as follows: "Countdown To Freedom,
a ground breaking documentary which was filmed 20 years ago in April
1994 at the personal invitation of then President in Waiting, Nelson
Mandela, will be broadcast for the first time on television on Freedom
Day, Sunday, 27 April on Mzansi Magic at 16:00. "
Kyknet has various special editions of their programs Jukebox (focussing on music in a free South Africa), Toks 'n Tjops (Focusing on Sport in the new South Africa) and Robinsons Regstreeks (focussing on the upcoming elections).
PERSONAL ANALYSIS: The Mzansi group of channels along with Vuzu, all local channels, all have special on air idents celebrating 20 years of freedom. I find that it is quite eyebrow raising that not one of the local channels that do not have primarily black target markets have on air logos like these channels. These include Kyknet and MNet, all of which have versions exculsive to the South African market. Do viewers of these channels not celebrate Freedom Day? The excuse that those channels are broadcast in other countries does not stand considering that we often see on air idents celebrating freedom in other countries on the Africa Magic channels yet here they seem to be 'protecting' the rest of the continent from knowing that South Africa is celebrating Freedom Day.

eNCA Experiment with 4pm "General News" Slot
eNCA seems to be doing some experimenting with its 4pm-6pm generic news bulletin anchored by Gareth Edwards.
What was initially through the years just a standard news anchor in seat reading the news bulletin is becoming increasingly a more interesting and exciting bulletin to watch now that Gareth Edwards anchors it. Gareth follows in the steps of the likes of current News Night anchor Iman Rappetti, current Morning News Todday and SA news legend Dan Moyane, Mid Morning presenter (and a former prime time anchor at SABC3) JoAnne Joseph and former prime time anchor Nikiwe Bikitsha in carrying the slot. By just looking at those names, one can see that the 4pm slot has historically been anchored by either people that have had great things happen in their career before taking the slot, or were promoted to greater things following their stint in the slot. It seems as if Gareth is destined for the latter.
But back on topic. Unlike the anchors before him, Gareth no longer just sits in the corner set reading the news, he actually walks across the whole studio, starting at the main desk, where he reads the headlines and previews what is to come, before moving to the larger screen behind him, all shown with more-dramatic-than-usual camera work.
Consistently throughout the two-hour bulletin he referred to the show as Afternoon News (On Twitter, #AfternoonNews), which is interesting because, other than the channels three 'main' news bulletins (Morning News Today, News Day and News Night), no other slot on the channel is referred to by a name, only labelled 'General News' on the DStv i-Plate and as eNCA by the anchors. Could the bulletin's name officially be renamed Afternoon News? We will wait and see.
One thing that has always stood out about the 4pm slot was its ability to attract guests to discuss stories, often guests of a high caliber. With all the changes taking place, this is the one part of the show that has stayed true to its legacy. Friday they had both Nickolaus Bauer ( who discussed the harrassment he went through at the hands of SAPS police officers at a rally. This story eventually crept its way to the top of the headlines later during prime time) and Toby Shapshack( who discussed a new patent of Apple's. Interestingly enough, he has a tech show on another channel, CNBC Africa, but appeared on a competitor instead).
The bulletin also had a business report in its last half hour presented by prime time business anchor Arabile Gumede, who has received a considerable amount of criticism since joining the channel.

Who Did it Better: The Virtual Studio Edition
As the elections draw nearer, the news channels are seeking more innovative ways to compete.
One such way is by ANN7 who now has a "virtual studio," seen below:
This made me do the obvious thing of comparing their virtual 'parliament' to CNN's 'Virtual Senate', seen below:
Though I must applaud their effort to innovate, I have to say that ANN7 comes a distant second (though, admittedly, CNN themselves receive a lot of criticism that comes with having a virtual studio that has been said to be 'over the top')
The animation in the ANN7 'virtual studio' seems a bit cheaply done: not as smooth as it could be or as richly detailed as one would want.
The camera angles aren't as versatile or exciting as the ones used in the CNN studio.
Lastly, the correspondent that ANN7 has in the studio is not nearly as good as Tom Foreman, often stumbling over words or using words or phrases innapproriately.
ANN7 has a long way to go, but they show promise when it comes to the virtual studio

As the Election Date Draws Nearer, ANN7 Channels ramp Up Political Coverage
As the May 7th Election Date Draws Nearer, eNCA, ANN7 and SABC News are all pushing their political coverage into overdrive.
On ANN7, as previously reported, they have sent out 9 teams across the country to get the 'man on the ground' feel on issues like service delivery and also conducted a first-of-its-kind election poll in South Africa. Other than two hours dedicated everyday to this program, election and political coverage is also heavily featured in other programs.
On Sundays, former eNCA political analyst, now at ANN7, Hajra Omarjee anchors Political Edge at 8pm, scheduled for 30 min. However, the edition on Sunday, 13th April ran nearly an hour overtime as she had a debate that drew senior leaders from the DA, ANC, Cosatu and the EFF.
Not only did she have to moderate the leaders that often spoke over each other, she had to control an often rowdy crowd, often resorting to shouting.
Overall, it was a really well done debate done from their broadcast facility, done by one anchor with a not so quiet panel. I must say it was much better than eNCA show The Big Debate that takes a somewhat similar approach, but despite that show not being live, it has a lot of unnecessary comments on it (I am not against letting 'normal' people having their views aired, I just feel they should be constructive and not repeitive, especially on a show that has the luxury of time to edit the show before airing)
(If you wondering, the news bulletin that had to immediately follow this broadcast was done from a separate green screen facility)
Despite being the least watched of the local news channels, ANN7 is surprisingly able to constantly draw big name guests to all of their shows, especially the well done ANN7 Prime with Chantal Rutter Dros where they have a guest with every story. At the end of Sunday's broadcast, Hajra mentioned she was so humbled that they were able to get the caliber of guests that they did, which was rather nice of her to say.

How CNNUS's Documentaries now affect CNNI
(c) CNNI |
Both of these directly affect the schedule of CNNI.
Firstly, the 9pm show has traditionally been simulcast on CNNI since the days of Larry King following a live edition of Anderson Cooper 360. As some of these shows will not convey well with CNNI's schedule or audience. Yes it may be 9pm in the US and 3am here in South Africa, but it will be the middle of the morning in Asia, where it obviously wouldn't be a good idea to show those shows (which you can read about in the post below this). The international audience also might not resonate well with some shows like Chicagoland and thus I doubt any of these shows will be shown onCNNI.
Another addition to their schedule is the return of one of the brands from their hey day, news bulletin CNN Tonight, which is said to be hosted by a rotating cast of anchors. This will be aired at 10pm US time, the first time in a long time they have had a fixed live broadcast at that hour. I predict it will be simulcast on CNNI in the 4am CAT slot currently occupied by a repeat of Quest Means Business. Here, again, the name of the show doesn't exactly consider an international audience that might be watching in the middle of the morning.
Another sad thing about them announcing these shows is that it ends the hopes of the likes of anchors Jake Tapper, Smerconish, Don Lemon and Bill Weir (who was brought in to CNN to host a show which forever remains in 'development'). All of the aforementioned anchors were to 'audition' for the 9pm slot since Piers Morgan left, but at the time of the announcement of what will be taking the slots, only the first two actually got to carry out their 'audition.'
The overall new US schedule leaves three hours open on the CNNI schedule, all of Piers' old slots: 1am CAT, which was a repeat slot here on the EMEA (Europe Middle East and Africa feed). Currently it is filled with the first hour of CNN NewsRoom Live from Hong Kong, CNN's Asian breakfast show.
3amCAT (which will now have to be programmed by them)
1pmCAT(Which this week has been filled with the US breakfast show New Day, even though it is prime time in Asian markets.

CNN ANNOUNCES NEW PRIMETIME SCHEDULE (Press Release Only)
Mike Rowe, Lisa Ling, John Walsh Join Anthony Bourdain, Morgan Spurlock for CNN Original Series
Series and Films to Air at 9 PM, CNN Tonight to Air at 10 PM
CNN today announced a new primetime lineup that continues to build on the network’s strategy of offering both live, breaking news programming as well as quality, original series, CNN Films and in-house documentaries.
As part of the announcement, the network is bringing Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) back to series television, in a new program called Somebody’s Gotta Do It. In addition, proven television personalities John Walsh (America’s Most Wanted) and Lisa Ling (Our America with Lisa Ling) will also join CNN, with their own new, original series. CNN will also premiere The Jesus Code, which
will take viewers on a forensic and archaeological journey through the
Bible. And CNN announced that the ten-part original series The Sixties,
from Playtone and acclaimed producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, will
premiere in late May. The network also announced that its Peabody and
Emmy-award winning hit Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown has been picked up for an additional four cycles in 2015 and 2016 and its critically acclaimed series Morgan Spurlock Inside Man has been renewed for another cycle in 2015. CNN has also entered into a development deal with the producers of Chicagoland to tell the story of another great American city.
All of those original series, plus a weekly documentary
from CNN’s in-house documentary unit, will air at 9pm, ET beginning this
summer.
In making the announcement at CNN’s Upfront presentation
in New York City, CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker said, “The best
journalism is, at its core, great storytelling. We are so pleased to
welcome some of the finest storytellers in the business to CNN, to join
the award-winning team of world class journalists and storytellers who
have made CNN the home to this kind of quality programming for more than
30 years. The seamless integration of original series and live news
coverage, which has been on display the last two months, is the
foundation of our new primetime lineup.”
That primetime lineup will begin with Erin Burnett Outfront at 7pm ET, followed by Anderson Cooper 360 at
8pm ET. The 9pm, ET hour will be the new home of CNN’s Original
Series, CNN Films and the network’s in-house produced documentaries like
Dr Sanjay Gupta’s Weed and Anderson’s Cooper’s The Survivor Diaries. Over the last year, CNN’s four most-watched series have been Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown, Morgan Spurlock Inside Man, Chicagoland and Death Row Stories. At 10pm, ET CNN will debut a one-hour news program called CNN Tonight, a live hour of the day’s biggest stories, with rotating hosts anchoring the program.
New CNN Original Series:
Mike Rowe’s new series Somebody’s Gotta Do It brings
viewers face to face with men and women who march to the beat of a
different drum. In each episode, Rowe visits unique individuals and
joins them in their respective undertakings, paying tribute to
innovators, do-gooders, entrepreneurs, collectors, fanatics – people who
simply have to do it. This show is about passion, purpose, and
occasionally, hobbies that get a little out of hand. (Produced by Pilgrim Studios)
In a new documentary series for CNN, award-winning journalist and author Lisa Ling takes
her audience on a gritty, breathtaking journey to far corners of
America, immersing herself in sub-cultures that are unusual, bizarre and
sometimes dangerous. Each episode delves into an alternative sect of
everyday life, giving viewers an inside look at some of America’s most
unconventional segments of society. (Produced by part2pictures)
The Hunt with John Walsh, a
documentary-style, non-fiction program will take advantage of Walsh’s
unique statue and perspective in television journalism and will tell
stories of ongoing international criminal investigations in which the
suspect is a fugitive at large. Through interviews with victims, loved
ones and law enforcement and the exploration of new leads, The Hunt will
provide the public with salient information to help in the fugitive’s
apprehension. (Produced by Zero Point Zero Productions)
Finally, how could the most famous man in history have
left almost no trace behind? Bringing the most compelling artifacts
together for the first time, The Jesus Code will take viewers on a
thrilling high-stakes journey through forensics, biblical archeology
and forgery in history, exploring the evidence of Jesus’ existence by
questioning the authenticity of sacred relics. (Produced by Nutopia
Productions)

Well That Didn't Take Long: Mzansi Magic Music's "Flagdship" show #plscallme Cut down to Just One Night
(c) Mzansi Magic |
Just last week I was speculating that Mzansi Magic Music's recently launched "flagship" show is likely to be cut back in a similar vein as Channel O's flagship show, Turn Up.
#Plscallme, the older of the two very similar shows was launched back on 21 January of this year to much fan fare with former Jam Alley Presenter V-Mash along with Nestum and Phule Welsh. The show initially ran a very odd schedule of Tuesday to Saturday: Tuesday to Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 6pm.
It now seems that the show will only air on Saturdays for the foreseeable future in the 6pm slot, which I really thought would be the worse of the slots considering people are usually out at that time on a Saturday or watching sports.
The underlying [sad] story here is Mnet's inability to actually invest time in a show that doesn't blast into newspapers and news the way their soaps like Isibaya or shows like Idols do. As a paycaster, should they even be worried about ratings? I am a firm supporter of as much local content being produced as possible, especially shows like #Plscallme or Turn Up were, even though I am frustrated that they seem to be recorded on cellphones. They provide a platform for people across different local entertainmen industries: actors, singers, entertainers were all featured on these shows. Now both only retain 20% of their original output. Mnet should really learn how to invest resources over the longterm in a project.

CNBC Africa Original Content Comes to Mindset Learn, allowing CNBC Africa shows to be seen for the first time on Openview HD, Starsat and Freevision
Mindset Learn has silently started adding reruns of CNBC Africa programming daily from 19:30 to 20:30, repeated at 23:30
No announcement of the additions has been made from either channel on this deal, and whether Mindest would be paying for the content considering that they are a non profit organisation.
The deal now gives viewers on all of DStv's competitors access to local business shows, something non of them had access to before. The Mindset Learn channel, of course, is the only channel broadcast on all local satellite platforms, pay and free-to-air, and on all packages. This comes as a relief to the likes of StarSat and OpenviewHD who are often under fire from consumers for not showing any local news content.
However, at this stage it is not known exactly how old the content shown Mindset Learn would be.
One also has to question why this move was made as the core audiences of the two channels, Mindset being school learners and teachers while CNBC's being business people and consumers of news, are vastly different and one cannot see any benefits for the channels, other than maybe a bit of exposure for CNBC and two hours of content on Mindset Learn now no longer needing to be programmed by them. One can argue that iit is two hours of educational, schooling content being lost everyday.
At the moment the schedule looks as follows:
Monday
19:30-Captains of Industry
20:00-15 Minutes with Longevity
Tuesday
19:30- The Entrepreneurial Edge
20:00-Top Trader
Wednesday
19:30-On the Couch
20:00-Mansfield Money Sense
Thursday
19:30-Sport Talk
20:00-Techno Busters
Friday
19:30-Your Money Matters
20:00-Tech at Work
I have reached out to both channels for further comment

Channel O scales back flagship show, Turn Up
Copyright: Channel O |
Started back in February to no promotion what so ever, Turn Up was meant to be the channel's new flagship show, in line with the channels recent slight relaunch with a new schedule, new name for video walls and graphics. The channel planned a new studio for the show, that was apparently nearly completed at launch, though nothing has happened of it.
The channel is billing this move to prime time on Friday Nights as an upgrade to the show, even though it is hard to see losing 80% of your broadcast time as an upgrade. This is the channel's second attempt at launching a new 'flagship' show after ending its long running daily two hour show O-boma, which was hosted by the likes of Nonhle Thema, Lungile Radu and KB. That show was ended on July, 10th 2009 with the channel stating back then that they would be shortly announcing its replacement. That replacement was the shortlived Young Gifted and African daily show, which disppeared silently.
Now things are not looking too good for this show that seems to be recorded using a cellphone. It does, however, free Siyabonga to devote more of his time to V Entertainment and V Prime on Vuzu.
One has to wonder why it is sooo hard for Mnet to launch a successful show on this channel. Their other properties of similar style shows include V Entertainment on Vuzu, the well done Star Gist on Africa Magic and Pls Call Me on Mzansi Magic Muic. Could it be an over saturation of similar shows? Probably.
Gerry Rantseli-Elsdon Silently Quits Vuka Africa
Gerry was one of the three major hires brought in by the channel as its 'faces,' the others being Prime Time anchor Chantal Rutter Dros, formerly of Carte Blanche, and famous musician, Arthur who hosts Sessions, a chat show with local celebs |
In the article it states that she left the show because it has never been her intention to stay with the channel past the 24th February expiration date of her contract, which is very odd. Think about it: Why would a channel hire someone with the known intention of only sticking around for a few months, making them the face of the channel and the host of their breakfast show that they pumped quite a lot of resources into.
Since Gerry has left, the show has not been as good as it once was. What was once a promising breakfast show with many interviews and discussions of contemporary issues (with a seperate news reader at the top and bottom of the hour) is now just a shadow of its former self, now just a generic news bulletin with a name of what was once a proper breakfast show, Vuka Africa. What a disappointment.
ANN7 Expands Footprint into the African continent
What is known as the AFRICAN News Network 7 has finally actually started broadcasting to the rest of Africa today. Although, their signal will only reach countries falling the DStv IS20 satellite footprint, meaning mainly Southern African countries.
ANN7, the least watched and youngest of South Africa's three news channels (the other two being eNCA and SABC News), is finally joining the other two in having their signal reach the countries other that South Africa. But unlike the other two, they broadcast a nightly news bulletin in prime time centered around the African continent.
Ironically, however, despite being called AFRICAN News Network and having a daily African news bulletin, and now reaching the rest of the continent, the channel, unlike both their main competitors, however do not have any bureaus outside South Africa
